Looking for a non-competitive, safe environment for your child to learn the game of football that doesn’t require daily practices and long drives to games?
Capistrano Beach residents Patty and Mike Carran want to meet you. The Carrans are weeks away from launching the inaugural season of 5 on 5 League Football, a flag football program designed to give every player plenty of playing time in an environment geared more toward learning and fun than winning.
“This is a league that’s non-competitive and teaches players the rules of the game,” said Patty Carran, a Capistrano Beach resident and co-founder of the program. “This is just a terrific way to get the kids out there to play on the weekends. It’s a very low time commitment.”
By low, Carran promises that players will practice only once a week at Palisades Elementary School and will play one, hour-long game a week at the same campus. She said many players at the I-9 League in Laguna Hills—the organization the Carrans played in before deciding to offer a similar league in Dana Point—had no problems playing in other sports like baseball and soccer.
“We even run the leagues in the winter and spring, so kids who want to play tackle can still play,” she said.
The Carrans are holding an in-person registration event at 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on Friday, March 21 at Palisades Elementary School. Parents may also register their children at the program’s website. The Carrans plan on offering four age divisions, including 5–7, 8–9, 10–11 and 12–14. The league costs $155 and includes jerseys, flags, awards and tournaments.

This looks like a great league. It is time we focused on fun and values for our younger children. There will be plenty of time for heavy competition when they get older.
