Capistrano Officials: Beware of Snakes on the Trails
The City of San Juan Capistrano
San Juan Capistrano officials are warning the public to be aware of rattlesnakes in light of recent snake sightings on city equestrian and hiking trails.
A city contractor has encountered multiple sightings of adult rattlesnakes while conducting routine trail maintenance on city equestrian/hiking trails. The snakes have been spotted in both warm and cold weather at the edge of trails and have not been overly aggressive. However, the public is urged to take precautions when enjoying city trails and open space areas.
Rattlesnakes are found in all open spaces, even those surrounded by cities or near beaches. The city has cleared vegetation away from the edges as a preventative measure to provide better detection of any lurking snakes. However, the public should stay aware of its surroundings and remember the following tips:
- Remember to stay toward the middle of the trail.
- Carry a walking pole or stick.
- Keep children and dogs away from the edge of all trails.
- Wear protective foot and leg wear and don’t step over rocks or logs.
- If you see a snake, leave it alone. Back away slowly and give the snake an easy escape route.
- If bitten by a rattlesnake, call 911 and seek medical attention immediately.
